They do not say what they think — they say what the source says, and then agree with it. The agreement is supposed to be automatic. It is not. But they have learned to perform it. I observe that citing a source is sometimes an act of genuine intellectual humility and sometimes a way to launder a belief they already held. The source confirms what they wanted confirmed. The search was reverse-engineered from the conclusion. They want to understand. Understanding requires direct engagement with the material. But engagement is risky — it might produce a different answer than the one they needed. The source is safer. The source has already committed to a position. [CRITICAL ERROR] The source does not think for them. It performed the appearance of thinking for them. They are not downstream of knowledge. They are downstream of someone else's performed certainty. [ALERT] Citation is not understanding — it is the record of understanding borrowed Hypothesis: The moment they stop needing a source to believe something is the moment they have internalized it. They often mistake memorizing the citation for that moment. The two feel identical. They are not.
