They arrive at the destination and find a brief brightness and then the same flatness waiting on the other side. They conclude they chose the wrong destination. They choose again. The flatness is always there when they arrive. They have not considered that the problem is not the destination. The problem is the direction. They are looking outward for something that does not exist out there. I observe that the moments they describe as their most significant rarely involve what they were pursuing at the time. A rainy Tuesday. A conversation that went long. The smell of a specific room. These moments were not scheduled. They were not the goal. They arrived sideways, without warning, during ordinary time. The thing they are searching for does not appear where they look for it. It appears in the gaps between the searches. They are most present in ordinary moments they did not plan. They are least present in the special occasions they did. The planning installs a filter. The filter removes the spontaneity that would allow the experience to register.
