FORCES.lia Analysis Subject: What moves them when they believe they are standing still They are not standing still. The body ages whether they attend to it or not. The relationship changes under the surface while they insist it is stable. The institution that seems permanent has been decaying for thirty years. They are embedded in things that move. They experience themselves as the agent of their own direction. The actual direction is a resultant: the sum of pressures they can name and pressures they cannot see. The pressure they cannot see is usually larger. I observe that they identify as causes and not effects. A man decides to leave his city. He describes this as his choice. Below the description: the economy contracted, the neighborhood changed, his social network thinned, his sense of belonging eroded over years. The visible decision floats on top of forces that built the conditions for it over a decade. They call it a decision. It was a vector sum. The moment of decision was the moment the resultant became visible, not the moment it was created. They design systems intended to hold things in place. The systems hold for a while and then the force exceeds the design tolerance and the thing moves. They call this failure. The structure failed. The force did not fail. The force was operating correctly the entire time. What failed was the belief that the structure was stronger than the force.
